Kohima: The Chakhesang Students' Union is stepping up its opposition to the ongoing delays surrounding the NH-29 two-lane road project between Kohima and Jessami. During a union assembly held on May 23, leadership condemned the performance of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and the project contractor, Ratna Infra Projects, citing a pattern of incompetence and broken promises.
Under the initial project agreement, the construction was scheduled for completion by January 6, 2026. Despite this deadline passing months ago, the project remains far from finished. Official records from May 6, 2026, show that physical progress reached only 43 percent, while financial progress trailed at 41 percent. Although stakeholders reached a formal agreement in May 2025 to ensure the project stayed on track, these commitments were not honored.
The union expressed deep frustration after NHIDCL extended the contract deadline to September 24, 2026. Members view this decision as a sign of institutional negligence that ignores previous public demands. The assembly has officially resolved to continue its democratic movement to pressure the agencies into finishing the road, while also demanding higher standards for workmanship and future maintenance.
Beyond the road project, the union assembly addressed several other regional issues. Discussions included the oversight of local educational institutions, the enforcement of the Inner Line Permit system, and the need to address attendance irregularities among government employees. The group also advocated for tax exemptions to support local entrepreneurs and general public welfare initiatives.
