Aizawl: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has pledged Rs 10 crore worth of rice to assist Mizoram with its ongoing refugee relief efforts. The commitment followed a meeting in New Delhi on Friday between Shah and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
Lalduhoma reported that the state is currently providing shelter and essential aid to nearly 40,000 displaced people. This group includes over 30,000 individuals from Myanmar who fled after the 2021 military coup, along with 2,365 refugees from the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh and several thousand people displaced by ethnic violence in Manipur.
According to an official statement from the Chief Minister's Office, the Union Home Minister confirmed the allocation during their discussion at Kartavya Bhawan. The statement noted, "In response, the Union Home Minister informed the Chief Minister that the Central government would provide rice worth Rs 10 crore to the government of Mizoram for the relief and support of the refugees."
Beyond immediate humanitarian aid, the Chief Minister sought federal support under the Security Related Expenditure scheme to combat drug trafficking and cybercrime. While Mizoram is often excluded from this funding due to its lack of insurgency, Lalduhoma argued that the state needs additional resources to maintain order and manage its borders. Shah encouraged the state to submit further development proposals under the PM-DeVINE initiative to secure additional federal backing for regional projects.
