Agartala: Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar announced a Rs 427 crore investment for urban development in Tripura. The funding aims to bolster various infrastructure projects, including a significant solid waste management facility in DC Nagar that has already received Rs 100 crore from the Central government.
During a review meeting with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Khattar highlighted ongoing efforts to improve municipal sanitation. These include the construction of 11 new sewage treatment plants expected to be operational by December, along with additional support for waste collection and toilet infrastructure in towns like Agartala, Dharmanagar, Melaghar, and Udaipur. The state has also proposed projects worth Rs 1,200 crore under the Urban Challenge Projects Fund, with approvals anticipated shortly.
The Minister also shared updates on the PM SVANidhi scheme, which supports street vendors with affordable credit. In Tripura alone, over 9,300 loans have been approved, totaling nearly Rs 15 crore. Across the Northeastern region, the scheme has provided more than Rs 430 crore through over 2.59 lakh loans.
Regarding the energy sector, the government is pushing for two lakh rooftop solar installations by March 2027 under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Officials were urged to curb illegal power connections and reduce system losses. Tripura reached a peak electricity demand of 270 MW in May, and the state expects to ramp up generation capacity to 300 MW by next year.
