Guwahati: Four patients suffered injuries Thursday, July 30, when a ceiling section collapsed inside the Plastic Surgery department at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati. The debris struck the patients while they were undergoing treatment.

Chaos broke out immediately. Staff rushed to help the victims as panic spread across the ward. Medical personnel treated the patients on-site, and hospital authorities confirmed their condition is currently stable.

The collapse spotlighted long-standing infrastructure failures at one of Assam's premier healthcare institutions. The ceiling had been in a deteriorated condition for a considerable period, with sources citing inadequate repair and maintenance as the likely culprit. Hospital officials have yet to provide specific details on the cause of the failure or announce a formal inquiry into why the ceiling fell. As one official noted, the incident has raised "concerns over the maintenance of infrastructure" at the government facility.
