Guwahati: Bongaigaon district officials forced a schedule change for all schools on Friday, August 14. Rising temperatures triggered the move. Government, provincial, self-financed, and private institutions must comply immediately. Classes start at 7:30 am across the board.
The clock dictates the rest. Lower primary schools up to Class V run until 11:30 am. Upper primary, covering Classes VI to VIII, wrap up by noon. Secondary students in Classes IX to XII stay until 12:30 pm. These hours stick until further notice.
Pallavi Medhi, Inspector of Schools for the Bongaigaon District Circle and in-charge District Elementary Education Officer, signed the order. The directive mandates specific protections for children. Assemblies must move to shaded areas or rooms. Principals must ensure functional fans, drinking water, and adequate seating.
School heads received strict orders regarding student health. "Schools have also been directed to contact parents and arrange prompt medical treatment if any student falls ill due to the heat," officials noted. Administrators must keep kids away from outdoor play. Officials also banned ice cream, phuchka, and other roadside food vendors from operating near campus gates. Students cannot buy from these sellers.
Uniform rules relaxed to keep pupils cool. The district wants students in comfortable clothing during the heatwave. The new schedule remains in force until the heat breaks.

Authorities confirmed the move aims to shield students and teachers from the most punishing, peak daytime temperatures. The order holds the force of the competent authority, ensuring broad compliance across all educational levels.
Meanwhile, the heat has pushed officials in Lakhimpur district to act. Starting Monday, all schools there will shift to an earlier schedule, with classes beginning at 7:00 am. Under that directive, lower primary schools will wrap up by 11:00 am, upper primary by 11:30 am, and high school or higher secondary students by noon. District education officials cited the health and safety of students as the primary reason for the shift.
