Itanagar: The Bomdila Tourism Society and Radio Kameng launched a new campaign to put West Kameng back on the tourist map. The Bomdila Connect carnival took place on July 24. It stretched from the Sahara Tyre area to Lower Gompa.
Nearly 40 cultural groups joined the march. They showcased local traditions through the Yak, Aji Lhamu, Kukri, Hrusso, and Sajolang dances. School students marched alongside them. They carried placards pushing for better waste management and environmental health.
Kalaktang MLA Tseten Chombey attended as the chief guest. He noted that Bomdila once dominated the Kameng region before places like Tawang, Dirang, and Shergaon took the lead. Chombey pledged government support for the event. He said, "Bomdila had once been the centre of the Kameng region but gradually lost its prominence while destinations such as Tawang, Dirang and Shergaon emerged as popular tourist hubs."
West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Dr. Dilip Kumar also backed the effort. He urged residents to follow the four-colour waste segregation system. He pushed for more involvement in weekly social service tasks. During the ceremony, the community honored Geshe Lobsang Norbu for planting over 1.5 lakh trees in the region.
The event drew support from the West Kameng district administration, the Arunachal Tourism Society, and the 4/9 Gorkha Rifles. Attendees included SP D.W. Thongon, Padma Shri Guru Tulku Rinpoche, former minister Japu Deru, SSB members, the 2nd Arunachal Scouts, lamas, and local department heads.
