Shillong: Assam health minister Ashok Singhal ordered the state health department to stay on high alert Monday. The flood situation in Upper Assam is growing worse. Singhal held an emergency video conference with representatives from the Assam Medical College and Jorhat Medical College. He also spoke with local administrators from the flood-ravaged districts of Jorhat, Charaideo, and Sivasagar.
The minister wants results. He told officials to stockpile essential medicine and prepare emergency medical teams for immediate deployment. He insisted that teams organize health camps in all hit areas. Special focus must go to safe drinking water and sanitation. He expects a fast response to any health emergency.
This order follows a separate review of infrastructure in Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Bongaigaon. MLAs and National Health Mission officials attended that session. They examined medical facilities, staffing, and government health schemes. Singhal wants C-section services in every assembly constituency. He stated, "This would help ensure timely treatment for complicated pregnancies and reduce the need to refer pregnant women to hospitals located far away." He believes this will boost maternal and newborn care. The minister also aims to cut mortality rates, track high-risk pregnancies, and expand free dialysis.
