Assam Governor Pushes for Better Animal Disease Controls

Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya pushed for tighter animal health security during a July 28 regional conference at Assam Veterinary and Fishery University. The event brought together policymakers and scientists to address cross-border disease risks. Healthy animals drive farmer profits. The Governor noted that healthy livestock is essential for ensuring the economic well-being of farmers.

Acharya launched two new software applications, NER-LDF and PDDES, to boost disease monitoring. Dr K P Suresh, Dr Abhijit Deka, and Dr N N Barman developed these tools. AVFU Vice-Chancellor Dr Niranjan Kalita opened the day-long session. Guest of Honour Dr K M Bujarbaruah warned that the region remains vulnerable to incoming animal pathogens.

Veterinary experts from across the Northeast joined ICAR officials for the event. Dr Y P S Malik, Dr N N Barman, and Dr K P Suresh led technical talks. Participants examined disease diagnosis, current infrastructure, and gaps in regional protection. Assam Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr Dipjyoti Rajkhowa also attended. Dr Bibekananda Saikia, Dean of the College of Veterinary Science in Khanapara, closed the event with a vote of thanks.
