Guwahati: Assam Police launched a statewide crackdown on scammers exploiting flood relief efforts. The Criminal Investigation Department is investigating nearly 50 social media accounts for running illegal fundraising drives. Investigators are tracking UPI IDs and QR codes used to solicit money from the public. They suspect these accounts aim to profit from the ongoing disaster. The cyber cell is now examining financial transactions linked to approximately 40 bank accounts connected to these fraudulent collections.

Authorities intend to trace digital trails to hold perpetrators accountable. Police warned that anyone caught misusing donations intended for flood-affected residents will face legal action. "The ongoing drive aims to prevent fraudulent fundraising and promote ethical reporting during flood relief operations across the state," officials stated. They advised the public to verify the legitimacy of organizations before donating and to report any suspicious campaigns.

The police also released an advisory targeting content creators and social media users. This guidance mandates that creators stop sharing unblurred photos or videos of flood-affected children. Revealing the identities of minors invites cybercrime risks and potential legal consequences. The state wants to protect the privacy and rights of these children during the recovery process.
