Guwahati: Katigorah police arrested Salma Begum Laskar this week. The former Jeevika Sakhi faces charges tied to a major loan scam involving Self-Help Groups in the Bhuvan Hill Gram Panchayat. Officers booked her under Case Number 29/2026. A local court sent her to judicial custody on Monday.

Local women gathered at the Katigorah station on Tuesday to cheer the move. They credit Dholai MLA Amiya Kanti Das and local police for the progress. These women had flagged loan irregularities in the Palonghat Development Block for months. One member told reporters, "We expressed hope that the arrest would pave the way for a fair and impartial investigation and ensure justice for those who allegedly suffered financial losses due to the scam."

Bhuvan Hill was once a Gram Panchayat before recent delimitation efforts changed the map. Police continue to dig into the scheme. They vow more legal action follows the current investigation.
