Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his respects to Dr. Verghese Kurien on Wednesday, September 9. He marked the death anniversary of the man known as the Milk Man of India. Kurien built the White Revolution. He reshaped the national dairy sector by putting power into the hands of millions of farmers through his cooperative model.
Sarma praised the late architect for his vision on social media. He cited Kurien for his work in building a self-reliant India. The Chief Minister wrote, "Dr Verghese Kurien, the ‘Milk Man of India’, led the White Revolution and transformed India’s dairy sector by empowering millions of farmers through the cooperative movement — which we are strengthening in Assam."
The state government plans to expand this legacy. Assam currently uses its cooperative department to manage dairy, agriculture, fisheries, housing, and marketing efforts. Officials want to lean on Kurien's framework to boost local livelihoods.
