Itanagar: Michi Marpu, a 20-year-old student from Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh, died Saturday in his rented room near Kothamangalam. Police found him on the floor with a rope around his neck in his Kozhipilly home. He was pursuing a BTech degree at MA College of Engineering. Medical staff at Kothamangalam Taluk Hospital declared him dead on arrival.
Investigators found a three-page note written in Hindi and English. Early findings suggest Marpu tried to hang himself but fell when the rope snapped. Police suspect academic pressure triggered the act. He struggled with some subjects and worried about losing a year of school. "The exact circumstances surrounding his death would be established only after a detailed probe," officials stated.
Roji M John, the Kerala Higher Education Minister, promised a full investigation into the matter. Kothamangalam police registered a case of unnatural death. Doctors will conduct a post-mortem once the family arrives.
Student groups, specifically the SFI and KSU, have scheduled protests. They blame the college for its harsh academic standards. MA College operates as an autonomous body and demands 22 credits to pass. Most other schools in the state require only 18. The college has not commented on these claims yet.
