Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh officials awarded Sub-Inspector Tamo Bakhang a state Gold Medal this Independence Day. He is one of only two recipients this year. He stands alone as the only individual honoree. The government gave the second medal to an organization.

Bakhang earned the honor for his work over four years of service. He faced down alleged drug kingpin Rohit Basumatory during a tense 2025 gunfight in Hollongi. He never backed down. Later, he took a heavy hit while managing unrest near 6 Kilo in Itanagar. Rioters attacked his vehicle with stones. Shattered glass mangled his eyes.

The officer went to Niba Hospital and TRIHMS before flying to Delhi for surgery. Officials worried he might go blind. He survived the ordeal. His career remains defined by, as reports noted, "courage, sacrifice and dedication to duty." He continues to serve the public despite the severe physical toll.
