Itanagar: Police arrested two men Saturday morning in Assam with six illicit musk deer glands. Officers raided Medhikuchi, located under the Sonapur police station in Kamrup Metropolitan district, following a tip-off. They caught the suspects red-handed. The confiscated haul weighs roughly 158 grams.
Authorities identified the men as residents of the Lower Siang and Changlang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Officials confirmed the smugglers brought the glands from Arunachal Pradesh, using Assam as a transit point for the illegal shipment. "Six musk deer glands, weighing around 158 grams, were recovered from their possession," a police official stated.
Musk deer hold protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. This law carries heavy penalties for anyone caught hunting, holding, or trading these animals. The secretion from the male deer gland fetches massive sums of cash on the international black market for use in perfumes. Detectives are now tracking the rest of the trafficking network to find where the shipment started and where it was headed.
