Guwahati: Nagaon police intercepted a major smuggling haul Wednesday night. Officers acting on a tip-off stopped a truck originating from Upper Assam at the Barghat bypass near Nonoi. They uncovered 5.82 lakh Burmese cigarette sticks hidden inside the vehicle. The seized contraband holds a market value of roughly Rs 40 lakh.
One suspect is in custody. The driver of the truck fled the scene before police could secure him. Investigators are now interrogating the man they caught to uncover where the shipment originated and where it was headed. A search operation continues to locate the missing driver.
Illegal trade routes in the region are evolving. "After smuggling of cattle, drugs and Burmese areca nuts through Nagaon district, now Burmese cigarettes are being smuggled to different parts of Assam and neighbouring states," a police official said. Authorities remain on high alert as they track these shifting black market trends.
