Guwahati: Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi is pushing for the immediate release of activist Sonam Wangchuk. Delhi Police moved Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital this past Saturday. He was mid-hunger strike. He wants Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to quit over national exam irregularities, specifically the NEET paper leak.
Gogoi calls the hospital visit forced and unconstitutional. He wants action. Speaking to the press, he stated, "The manner in which a person on a hunger strike was forcibly hospitalised, violating fundamental and constitutional rights, is deeply concerning. As a representative of the people of Assam and the North East, I demand that Sonam Wangchuk be released immediately."
Wangchuk represents a wider fight for the nation's future. Gogoi insists the Minister must go. He says the public must unite behind this cause. Opposition heavyweights including Arvind Kejriwal, Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Khera, Mamata Banerjee, and Samajwadi Party leaders have all slammed the police intervention.
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) keeps protesting at Jantar Mantar. They plan a march to Parliament for the Monsoon Session opening on Monday. Delhi Police sources say no permission has been requested. Even if they ask, officials likely will not grant it. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are currently in effect across the New Delhi district.
Separately, Gogoi is targeting the BJP on a different front. On July 19, he blasted their delimitation process in Guwahati. He says the BJP ignores constitutional principles. He points to major population disparities in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir constituencies. "We believe the process should follow constitutional principles and not create divisions based on religion, caste or region. Therefore, we will not accept BJP’s delimitation," he said.
