Aizawl: The Aizawl district administration has officially prohibited the sale, storage, and use of single-use plastic items at seven prominent tourist locations. This immediate ban follows a May 5, 2026, directive from the Supreme Court of India aimed at enforcing the Solid Waste Management Rules across the country.

The restricted sites include Lalsavunga Park, Falkawn Zokhua, Sakawrhmuituai Tlang, Hmuifang Tlang, Khawhpawp at Lawipu, Sairang Railway Station, and Sialsuk Tlang. The state government identified these areas through the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Department to better manage waste and prevent littering.

Vendors, visitors, and business operators are now required to replace disposable plastics with eco-friendly, reusable alternatives. To ensure adherence to the new policy, the district has deployed a dedicated enforcement team led by a nodal officer. Officials confirmed that violators will face penalties under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. According to the administration, the move aims to "curb littering, reduce plastic pollution and ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management regulations."
