Agartala: The Agartala Municipal Corporation has introduced its budget for the 2026-27 financial year, totaling Rs 975.91 crore. Mayor Dipak Majumder confirmed that the plan introduces no new taxes and represents the corporation's first-ever digital e-budget.
With projected receipts of Rs 974.93 crore, the corporation faces a minor deficit of Rs 97.67 lakh. A major feature of this budget is a proposal to raise Rs 100 crore through municipal bonds, making the civic body the first in Northeast India to utilize this financial tool. These funds are designated for the redevelopment of four city markets: Lake Chowmuhani Bazar, Durga Chowmuhani Bazar, GB Bazar, and Border Gol Chakkar Bazar.
The budget prioritizes capital expenditure, dedicating Rs 536.45 crore to urban infrastructure and civic improvement projects. An additional Rs 108 crore is reserved for broader infrastructure works across the city. The Asian Development Bank will also contribute Rs 167 crore to support road construction, drainage upgrades, and the building of a new water treatment plant.
The corporation plans to invest Rs 20 crore through the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund and set aside Rs 1 crore for new slaughterhouses in Bhattapukur, Pratapgarh, and the Pragati School area. Future development plans include installing electric furnaces at cremation grounds, improving burial facilities, establishing new wedding halls, and launching initiatives to control mosquito populations.
To enhance services, the city will open a 50-bed paperless civil hospital that provides specialized evening outpatient care. Revenue collection processes will also be streamlined by implementing digital tax payment systems across all ward offices.
