Kohima: Village Level Organizations in Zunheboto kicked off National Handloom Day on August 7. The event began at 9:00 am across the district. Women from 18 organizations under the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission took charge. They focused on honoring local weaving and the 1905 Swadeshi Movement.
Local Self-Help Group members turned their offices into workshops. They wove Sumi Naga shawls and knit traditional goods. Artisans demonstrated techniques to younger generations to keep skills alive. The work aims to secure cultural heritage and boost income for rural families.
Annkali K Yeptho, Block Programme Manager, pushed for local support. "Our main focus in observing this day is to preserve our identity, tradition practices and craftsmanship," she said. The effort falls under the SISD Yearly Thematic calendar for 2026-27. It highlights the economic shift toward traditional independence.
Area Coordinator Iloka K Yeptho noted the importance of the trade. Finished goods will eventually reach markets. Sellers will use the annual SARAS fair, private shops, and social media to move their products. The day served as a call to back local weavers for the long haul.
