Kohima: Zunheboto residents marked the Tuluni festival on July 8 at Sumi Hoho Ki. The Zunheboto Town GBs Association organized the event to foster unity. Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj attended the celebration. He praised the Sumi people for their culture.
Raj spoke about the power of togetherness during the festival. He told the crowd, "Whatever is ours is for you also, and whatever is yours is ours also. It is a message of brotherhood and peace among the people." He also voiced his commitment to the local community. He is currently learning the Sumi language to better connect with his neighbors.
The Deputy Commissioner honored the village leaders, known as Gaon Buras. He called them the custodians of society who hold history together. Meanwhile, the Sumi Literature Board Chairman Y Vihoshe Muru explained the weight of the holiday. He warned that modern life often erodes tradition. Tuluni acts as an essential check against this loss.
Festivals offer a path to settle old scores. They provide space for hospitality and genuine connection. Muru urged the younger generation to protect these stories. He believes documenting these worldviews keeps the culture alive. The event featured traditional folk songs and prayers from local church leaders to close out the day.
