Shillong: Ri-Bhoi district officials slapped down prohibitory orders to stop the Syiem of Hima Sohiong from visiting Umshalini this Saturday. Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini issued the directive to prevent the installation of signs or markers in the contested area. Tensions are running high. The village sits at the center of a bitter territorial fight between Hima Jirang and Hima Sohiong.
Assam authorities recently flagged concerns regarding road construction in the area. This pushback has spooked local officials who fear a violent confrontation. The administration acted under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023. This order bans gatherings of five or more people in and around the village. It also keeps individuals from the site entirely.
The ban extends beyond the Syiem himself. Representatives of Hima Sohiong and Hima Mawtamur are officially barred from entering Ri-Bhoi for meetings or related activities. The order specifically targets any attempt to claim authority over the land. Officials stated the move was necessary to prevent a "breach of peace" as territorial disputes continue to strain regional stability.
