Kohima: Multiple women's organizations across Nagaland have issued strong condemnations following recent sexual assault cases reported in Kiphire and Kohima. The groups, including the Sümi Totimi Hoho, Eastern Sümi Totimi Hoho, Yimkhiung Women Organisation, Zeliangrong Mipui Organisation, and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, expressed grave concern over the increasing frequency of violence against women and children in the region.
In Kiphire, an 82-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by an Armed Branch constable identified as Heluikie Nsanglung on June 17. Separately, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted in Kohima by a 40-year-old youth leader during church-related activities. These incidents have sparked widespread outrage among community leaders who are now calling for immediate accountability and legal action.
The Sümi Totimi Hoho described the incidents as “heinous and unacceptable,” emphasizing that such acts represent a severe violation of the rights and safety of vulnerable populations. These organizations have demanded that law enforcement agencies conduct thorough and expeditious investigations to ensure the accused face appropriate legal consequences.
Beyond seeking justice for the survivors, the groups have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding human dignity and protecting women and children from exploitation. They are urging citizens and institutions to remain vigilant and to actively oppose all forms of violence, noting that these crimes reflect a troubling decline in societal morality and public trust.
