Shillong: Krishi Vigyan Kendra hosted 188 farmers in Mawlaisyiem village on Thursday for an awareness session supporting the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyaan, or Save the Farm Campaign. The month-long initiative, which runs through June, is spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the ICAR to bolster soil health and limit dependence on harsh chemical pesticides.
District Kisan Morcha president K Wahlang joined Mawthadraishan Kisan Morcha president R. Marshillong at the event. Both leaders spoke extensively on the necessity of moving toward sustainable farming practices to ensure long-term productivity. The program featured representatives from the State Livelihood Mission, FOCUS, and ATMA, who discussed available government support services with local farmers.
Experts led technical demonstrations covering soil sample collection, the creation of Soil Health Cards, and the integration of Azolla as a sustainable biofertiliser. To help farmers implement these new methods, organizers distributed vegetable seeds, bio-pesticides, and veterinary supplements. One official noted, "The primary objective is to protect farmland, restore soil health, and promote sustainable agriculture by reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides."
