Shillong: The Voice of the People Party has officially dismissed rumors regarding internal instability and the potential defection of its Members of District Council. Party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit labeled the reports as recycled political tactics designed to undermine the party’s authority within the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
These allegations of discord arose after the VPP secured a significant victory in the February 2025 elections by capturing 17 of the 29 elected seats. Basaiawmoit stated, “There is no truth in these reports. They are nothing but an attempt by political opponents to create confusion.” He noted that similar rumors have persisted since the party first assumed control of the Executive Committee.
Public scrutiny increased following the June 20 resignation of Pynkhrawboklin Kharjahrin, the MDC for Mawkyrwat. Kharjahrin stepped down from his role leading the Council Assets Department, citing a need to focus on duties within his constituency. Although his departure marks the second such resignation since the VPP took office, he continued to participate in the recent summer session proceedings.
Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh has taken interim charge of the Council Assets Department. While the VPP maintains a solid majority in the district council, analysts suggest that maintaining cohesion is vital as the party prepares for the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary constituency by-election. The VPP leadership insists the organization remains united and committed to its current governance agenda.
