Shillong: Voice of the People Party candidate Batskhem Myrboh announced that his campaign for the upcoming Shillong parliamentary by-election will remain grounded in the party's 2024 Lok Sabha manifesto. He described the by-poll, triggered by the death of MP Ricky AJ Syngkon, as a chance to honor the mandate voters previously entrusted to the party.
Myrboh stated that his core legislative priorities include promoting secularism, democracy, and good governance while defending the rights of Meghalaya's indigenous population. His policy roadmap features a strong push for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit, the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule, and the extension of Article 371 provisions to the state. He also intends to advocate for stronger grassroots governance under the Sixth Schedule.
Economic and social development remain central to his platform. Myrboh plans to focus on enhancing central educational institutions within the state, promoting soft-skill development, and fostering foreign language proficiency to help local youth benefit from India's Act East Policy. Regarding regional industries, he intends to seek amendments to the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act to assist small-scale miners.
On the national stage, Myrboh emphasized his commitment to opposing the Uniform Civil Code and any efforts to impose a single language on minority groups. He also highlighted the necessity of better environmental protection and improved support for communities living near interstate and international borders. Ultimately, he pledged that his primary role in Parliament would be to act as a safeguard, ensuring that central government policies do not negatively impact the cultural or economic well-being of the people of Meghalaya.
