Guwahati: Muruli Bora still heads to the classroom. The educator from Datkota village in Kaliabor continues teaching his students nearly two years after he formally retired in 2024. He clocks a daily commute of 25 kilometres to reach a school in the Karbi Pahar area.
His return followed a staffing void. No new teacher took the post after his retirement, leaving a vacancy in the provincialised school. Bora worried about the academic future of his pupils. He chose to step back in. He started his career in 1989 and spent over three decades at the front of the room before his departure.
Bora views the profession as a duty. He remains a guiding force for both current and past students, insisting that remaining linked to his pupils is a privilege. He stated, "For some educators, teaching is not something that ends with a retirement order."
Teachers' Day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. It serves as a moment to highlight Bora's commitment to his craft. For him, the classroom is simply where he belongs.
