Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya visited the home of 95-year-old Prafulla Kumar Borthakur in Jamugurihat, Sonitpur, on September 5. He honored the retired primary school teacher as part of the Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman initiative. The program seeks out the oldest retired primary teachers in each district to recognize their service.
Acharya praised the enduring importance of educators in Indian culture. He told Borthakur, "The 95-year-old educator had witnessed the transformation of several generations and left a lasting impact on his students through the values, knowledge and confidence he imparted."
State officials spread the celebrations across the region. Authorities honored 35 senior retired teachers at the district level and 113 others at the Elementary Education Block level. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu attended a separate central function where he presented state awards to 15 teachers.
The honors extended to various academic sectors. Officials recognized 12 colleges granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission and 14 Associate NCC Officers. Four teachers holding new patents and five educators from the Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan also received awards.
Pegu called on the teaching community to drive change. He urged them to adopt modern technology to make the state education sector more innovative and student-centric. Teachers build society. They provide the discipline needed for a healthy future.
