Shillong: The Photkroh Dorbar Shnong condemned the attempted murder of KSU Ranikor Circle president Marconi Thongni. Thongni, who also chairs the local Water and Sanitation Committee, was attacked on June 19. Myntri Shipbarland Iawphniaw identified the suspects as Spect Syiemlieh and Biangsingson Syiemlieh. They are from Dondinar Panchering village.
The attack happened around 12:30 PM. Residents were building a public toilet when two men arrived on a motorcycle. They stabbed Thongni in the chest. A villager named Kitborlang Lyngkhoi also suffered injuries. Locals stepped in to save Thongni from further harm. The Dorbar Shnong has demanded that law enforcement authorities immediately arrest the suspects and ensure they are prosecuted according to the law.
Separately, Songsak residents reported overloaded coal trucks on the Songsak to Mendipathar road. The route has a nine-tonne limit due to weak bridges. Locals found four trucks carrying excess coal on June 19. They warned that these heavy loads damage the road and threaten bridges. Commuters and students rely on this route for daily travel.
In other news, Martin Luther Christian University in Shillong grabbed the top spot among private universities in Meghalaya. It placed 60th nationally in the IIRF India Ranking 2026. Assam Royal Global University also made headlines. It secured the 88th position overall in the Nature Index 2026 India Rankings, marking its second year in the top 100.
