Shillong: Dr. Yugal Kishore Mohanta, an assistant professor at USTM, played a key role in a new international study on enteric infections. The research appears in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a top medical journal. It covers health data from 1990 through 2023.
The study tracks the global burden of diarrhoeal diseases and the pathogens causing them. It reveals that these illnesses persist as major health threats. Low and middle-income nations face the highest risks despite recent gains in sanitation and care. The data gives leaders the facts they need to build better health policies.
Dr. Mohanta acts as a senior collaborator for the Global Burden of Disease Study at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Washington. He sees the work as a duty to improve public health worldwide. "Being part of such a globally significant study is both an honour and a responsibility," Mohanta stated.
USTM Vice Chancellor Prof. G.D. Sharma noted the pride this brings to the Northeast region. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation coordinates the effort. It remains the gold standard for measuring disease trends across the globe.
