Shillong: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda participated in a major plantation drive in Shillong on June 5 to mark World Environment Day. Joining local BJP leaders and party workers, Nadda promoted the flagship Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The campaign encourages collective environmental responsibility by dedicating tree-planting efforts to mothers. Nadda emphasized the symbolic link between the selfless care provided by mothers and the life-sustaining role of the natural world. During his address, he stated, "A mother serves her children selflessly throughout her life, and nature too nurtures and protects humanity. Preserving the environment is essential for the well-being of present and future generations."
Since its inception in 2024, the initiative has seen significant expansion. Nadda noted that the project evolved into a nationwide movement by 2026, with millions of supporters participating in conservation activities across the country. The Shillong event reflected a wider national effort, as BJP workers in various states held similar drives to reaffirm their commitment to ecological protection.
