Shillong: Union Health Minister JP Nadda inaugurated the ARHI Hospital in Jorabat on Thursday. The new facility aims to address critical gaps in Meghalaya’s healthcare sector by providing high-end cancer diagnostics and neonatal intensive care within the state.
The hospital is equipped with a PET-CT scan facility and a specialized oncology unit. These additions are designed to reduce the reliance of patients from Ri-Bhoi and the Khasi Hills on medical facilities in Guwahati. Situated on the Guwahati-Shillong Road, the hospital also includes a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and modular operation theatres, which are expected to improve trauma care survival rates and newborn support for rural residents.
Meghalaya Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, C&RD Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem attended the opening ceremony. The institution is chaired by AL Hek, a sitting MLA and former state Health Minister.
During the event, Nadda emphasized that the facility supports the National Health Policy by strengthening healthcare delivery. He stated, "The Northeast has seen a focused expansion of medical infrastructure through the Act East policy, aimed at bringing specialised treatment closer to the grassroots."
Local leaders noted that having these services available locally will significantly ease the financial and logistical challenges for families who previously traveled long distances to seek life-saving treatment.
