UDP Dismisses VPP Success Ahead of Shillong By-Election

Shillong: The United Democratic Party says the Voice of the People Party will struggle to replicate its 2024 election performance. UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne argued that voter moods shift quickly. Political waves rarely last.

The party has already tapped senior advocate Vivanstone G Kharngapkynta to run for the Shillong parliamentary seat. The post opened up following the death of VPP representative Ricky Andrew J Syngkon. While the Election Commission has yet to set a date, Chyne expects the vote to happen around October or November.

District and circle units are now working to build support on the ground. Chyne claims early feedback shows voters are moving toward their candidate. He told reporters: “The political atmosphere is not the same as it was during the previous election.”

The UDP leader insists that shifting trends across the country prove that electoral momentum is temporary. Party members are now focusing on solidifying their grassroots network to ensure a win when the polls finally open.
