Shillong: The United Democratic Party is shedding senior leadership. Members keep walking out the door. Despite the exodus, party bosses claim the regional force remains solid. General secretary Titosstarwell Chyne rejected claims that the party is fracturing under president Metbah Lyngdoh.
Recent departures include Bindo M. Lanong, Samuel Sangma, Jemino Mawthoh, Lambor Malngiang, Robertjune Kharjahrin, and Aman Warr. These exits follow remarks from legislator Paul Lyngdoh, who suggested the party lost its way. Chyne dismissed the concern as standard political turnover.
"There may be a sense of disappointment when leaders leave a party, but such developments are not unique to the UDP. Even national parties witness leaders shifting allegiance due to political survival or personal reasons," Chyne said.
The party argues the math proves its health. They jumped from six assembly seats in 2018 to 12 in the 2023 elections. Chyne insists the second line of leadership is ready to carry the load. He also flatly denied any splits within the legislature group, claiming all current MLAs are standing firm. While he acknowledged he cannot read minds, he maintained that no one is planning to jump ship before the 2028 vote.
