Agartala: The Pradesh Youth Congress has escalated a formal complaint to the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) following a volatile protest in Agartala on June 15. The party is calling for disciplinary action against Assistant Commandant Ram Kumar of the 140th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) due to his alleged conduct during the demonstration.

Protesters had gathered to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over NEET examination irregularities while also voicing concerns regarding inflation and unemployment. The situation turned violent when security forces intervened to disperse the crowd, leading to clashes between officers and participants.

Controversy grew after social media footage allegedly showed the officer using abusive language and ordering a lathi charge against demonstrators, including women. Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha condemned the actions, noting that the use of offensive language against women is unacceptable. Saha also alleged that the officer acted against the guidance of local police and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The Congress delegation submitted video evidence to the THRC to support their claims. While emphasizing respect for the security forces, Saha stated, "We hold the CRPF in high regard, but any deviation from professional conduct must be dealt with firmly."

Party leaders have already raised these concerns with CRPF authorities at the Salbagan camp, characterizing the incident as an excessive use of force. The Youth Congress has issued a 10-day deadline for authorities to take action, as the incident continues to fuel a wider debate in the state regarding the accountability of security forces during public protests.
