Agartala: Tripura University hosted the 12th National Handloom Week on Tuesday. The event took place at the Pariksha Bhawan Conference Hall. Organized by the Weavers Service Centre in Agartala, the program pushed students to view India's textile heritage as a viable business path. High-ranking officials attended the session, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das, Registrar Samir Kumar Shil, and Additional Secretary Ajit Sukla Das.
The industry needs new blood. Since starting in 2015, the Ministry of Textiles has expanded its reach to 29 centers across the country. These hubs hold awareness drives in schools and universities to keep traditional craftsmanship alive while modernizing production. Officials explained that the handloom sector offers a major route for income generation and global trade.
A student quiz competition highlighted local expertise in textile traditions. Presenters broke down specific government support systems, such as the Cluster Development Project, which offers up to Rs 2 crore in financial aid per cluster. Other initiatives include the India Handloom Brand for quality, the Handloom Mark for authenticity, and the Weavers MUDRA Scheme for credit. Digital tools like the E-Dhaga app now manage yarn supply services.
The organizers thanked university leadership for their role in the effort. They stated that the goal is "preserving traditional craftsmanship while creating sustainable livelihoods for artisans."
