Agartala: A high-level task force met at the Tripura State Secretariat on May 29 to address the ongoing challenges of teenage marriage and underage motherhood. Dr. Nupur Debbarma, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, chaired the session, which included representatives from various government agencies, including the health, education, and social welfare departments.
Dr. Debbarma stated that ending child marriage requires collective action rather than isolated efforts from individual departments. Participants identified school dropouts as a significant risk factor, noting that early marriage persists even among girls who have completed a decade of schooling. To counter this, the committee prioritized keeping adolescent girls in the education system while improving the delivery of reproductive and child health programs.
The task force plans to expand grassroots awareness campaigns focusing on nutrition and the dangers of early marriage. Officials also discussed creating a special monitoring cell to provide oversight and evaluate the effectiveness of these welfare initiatives at the field level. The National Health Mission released these details following the collaborative session.
