Agartala: Tripura legislator Ranjit Debbarma has formally requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement urgent measures to detect, detain, and deport illegal migrants living in or passing through the state. In a six-page letter sent on May 29, Debbarma highlighted the issue as a significant threat to national security and the regional demographic balance.
The MLA warned that Tripura’s porous border with Bangladesh is frequently exploited as a transit route for illegal entry. He alleged that many migrants have used fraudulent methods to secure official Indian identification, such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and passports. This practice has complicated efforts to distinguish them from local residents who share similar cultural and physical traits.
Debbarma linked illegal immigration to rising unemployment, land disputes, and increased criminal activity. He also expressed concern over the strain these trends place on the state’s healthcare and educational infrastructure, specifically citing the negative impact on indigenous communities. To combat these issues, he is pushing for the enforcement of the Inner Line Permit, the National Register of Citizens, and the Citizenship Amendment Act.
The legislator noted that he has previously raised these grievances with local authorities, including the Chief Minister and the Border Security Force. While he welcomed reports of a high-powered committee being formed to address the crisis, he maintained that government action remains insufficient. He hopes to discuss these documented concerns in person with Shah during the Home Minister’s scheduled visit to Tripura on June 5.
