Agartala: The Tripura Guerrilla Returnees’ Demand Committee has declared an indefinite blockade of the Assam-Agartala National Highway and railway lines beginning June 5. This move follows failed attempts to secure government action on a five-point list of demands intended to support former militants who surrendered before 1998.

Central to their protest is a stalled rehabilitation package. In 2007, the government approved a project worth 45 crore rupees to settle these individuals, and while roughly 22 crore rupees was spent between 2008 and 2018, the program ceased during the pandemic. The committee is now demanding the immediate release of the remaining funds to complete the rehabilitation process.

Beyond financial support, the group is calling for the dismissal of all legal cases still pending against them. Representatives state that they previously returned to mainstream society after negotiations with the former Left Front government, but they have received no updates since the project halted. With no official response to their recent appeals, the committee warns that the blockade will significantly disrupt connectivity between Tripura and the rest of the country unless their grievances are addressed.
