Agartala: Authorities in Tripura have begun issuing Indian citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act. Officials confirmed that two applicants have already received their credentials, with a third certificate scheduled for distribution soon.

The state has received 24 applications in total, all of which are being managed through a centralized online portal established by the Indian government. Ratan Biswas, Director of Census Operations and Chairman of the State Level Empowered Committee, stated, "Till now, we have received 24 applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act. Two applicants have already been granted citizenship certificates, one more certificate will be issued soon, and the remaining applications are under process."

The first two recipients, Jhalak Das Chowdhury and Sima Rani Banik, reside in North Tripura. The application process requires strict verification, beginning with a scrutiny by district-level committees. Following this, the Superintendent of Posts conducts inquiries and document checks before the State Level Empowered Committee provides final approval.

The law allows members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities who entered India from Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Afghanistan before December 31, 2019, to seek citizenship. Officials noted that the entire procedure is digital to ensure transparency and efficiency, with the remaining applications currently moving through the verification pipeline.
