Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh PWD crews are fast-tracking repairs on the Hollongi-Itanagar stretch of National Highway 415. The work comes days before Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan arrives in the capital for a two-day visit on September 8. The road is a mess. Heavy monsoon rains, landslides, and aggressive earth cutting left the 20-km route damaged.
PWD Chief Engineer Er C.S. Choutang and Highways Chief Engineer Er Nani Robin toured the highway to inspect the wreckage. This stretch links Hollongi, Assam, to Itanagar and acts as the primary route to Donyi Polo Airport. Officials identified siltation and drainage failures as the main culprits behind the current road decay.
Choutang noted that design delays involving IIT Guwahati slowed progress, but a new Detailed Project Report is now ready. The agency has brought in an Itanagar-based firm to design two key bridges between the Hollongi Check Gate and the Airport Tri-Junction. Choutang said, "The preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), design and survey had been delayed while IIT Guwahati was serving as the consultant agency for the project."
The department is currently conducting emergency maintenance while waiting for the full restoration plan to receive official sanction. Choutang warned residents to stop dumping debris into roadside drains. Blocked channels cause water to flood the carriageway and accelerate erosion. The department aims to secure the road surface while finalizing permanent structural fixes for the damaged corridor.
