Agartala: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced a strict enforcement policy targeting electricity theft and unpaid utility bills. The move aims to protect law-abiding customers from the financial strain caused by those who fail to pay for their services. The minister emphasized that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited is committed to providing uninterrupted power and will not offer leniency to defaulters.
Highlighting the impact of these violations, Nath stated, "Why should honest consumers suffer for the actions of dishonest individuals?" Officials noted that power theft damages distribution lines and transformers, driving up maintenance costs and degrading overall service quality.
Data from the electricity corporation reveals that 72,432 connections were severed over the past two financial years. During 2024-25, 50,418 accounts were disconnected, with 28,229 restored after payments were processed. The 2025-26 fiscal year saw another 22,014 disconnections, followed by 16,803 restorations. Efforts peaked in January 2025 with 12,675 disconnections in a single month.
The corporation has also stepped up its campaign against illegal hook-line connections. Officials removed 9,942 illegal lines in 2024-25 and 10,948 in the following year, collecting a combined total of over 6.5 crore rupees in penalties. Under the leadership of Managing Director Biswajit Basu, the agency continues to strengthen revenue collection and anti-theft operations across the state.
