Agartala: Debabrata Das arrived in New Delhi this week. The state award-winning artisan from Sonamura village represents Tripura at the national-level Indi Haat 2026 exhibition. He stands at the event to display traditional bamboo musical instruments, most notably the GI-tagged sarinda. It is a bowed string instrument native to Northeast India that relies on a horsehair bow to generate folk melodies.
The exhibition started on July 10 and runs until July 19. Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh opened the event alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles, including the Development Commissioners for Handicrafts and Handlooms. Das hopes the platform builds a wider profile for these local crafts. He intends to boost the commercial reach of his work.
Das explained his mission for the national stage. "The objective is to give Tripura's traditional bamboo sarinda a distinct identity in the global music arena and explore its commercial potential in international markets," he said. Ongoing preservation efforts for the craft continue back home in Tripura. These projects operate under the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts and the Handicrafts Service Centre in Agartala. Crowds at the exhibition have shown a keen interest in the bamboo instruments since the doors opened.
