Agartala: Tripura officials met with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan this week to outline an ambitious plan to reach a 50 percent Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education by 2035. The delegation, led by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, discussed strategies to strengthen the state's academic system and reduce the migration of students to other regions.
During the meeting, the state requested special financial assistance to establish two new universities and four degree colleges. Discussions also covered administrative challenges, including affiliation issues for new government colleges under Maharaja Bir Bikram University and the search for a new chairperson for the State Higher Education Council. Barman urged the Centre to accelerate the selection of a regular Vice-Chancellor for Tripura University, a process Pradhan promised would conclude soon.
To improve job prospects, the state proposed partnering with IIT Kharagpur to integrate vocational and skill-based courses into the curriculum. Pradhan encouraged the development of programs that address specific economic needs, stating that "expanding educational opportunities and adopting inclusive policies would be crucial to achieving the 50 per cent GER target by 2035 and reducing student migration to other states."
The Union Minister instructed officials to establish a high-level committee to draft a vision document for future institutional expansion. He also emphasized the importance of tailoring research and education opportunities to support tribal students across the state.
