Traffic flows on alternative route after Shillong road collapse

Shillong: Cars are moving again. A temporary route through Laitlyngkot and Laitkynsew opened Thursday, one day after a major cave-in wiped out the Shillong-Dawki road. The sinkhole beneath Umpareit bridge cut off the vital trade link between Meghalaya and Bangladesh.

National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited officials say the damage is massive. Heavy rain caused the collapse, and fixing it will take a long time. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong visited the site Monday and admitted, "immediate restoration was not feasible."

Travelers now rely on a private path through a local stone quarry. Pynursla Sub-Divisional Officer Gautam Warjri put strict rules on the route. Only light motor vehicles can pass. Construction work forces the road to close daily from 10 am to 4 pm and again from 10 pm to 5 am.

Other diversions are also in play. The Laitlyngkot-Pomlum road handles light and medium traffic. Only the Pomlum-Mawlieh stretch allows heavy trucks to keep moving. Commuters must clear the affected zone by 10:30 am each morning before crews resume their work.
