Tiwa Community Honors Warrior Jungal Balahu With New Statue

Guwahati: A statue of the legendary Tiwa warrior Jungal Balahu now stands in Konwar Gaon. The Morigaon district installation occurred on July 18 near the local village playground. Jiban Chandra Konwar, the Chief Executive Member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, led the ceremony before a large crowd of community members.

The event highlighted the warrior as a core figure of Tiwa pride and history. Local artists performed traditional folk songs during the inauguration, while guests received traditional gamosas as tokens of respect. Pranabjyoti Machrong, an executive member of the council, attended the ceremony alongside other regional dignitaries.

Residents expect the statue to inspire younger generations and protect the tribe's cultural identity. Jiban Chandra Konwar used the gathering to push for continued support of the group's traditions. He stated, "The occasion also marked the successful conclusion of the Tiwa Language and Cultural Workshop."

This workshop, managed by the Konwar Gaon Regional Tiwa Mathalai Takhra, began on July 5. The closing session drew central committee office-bearers and various local leaders. Officials view these twin events as a major push to safeguard the Tiwa heritage.
