Supreme Court Reviews Bail for Murder Suspect Sonam Raghuvanshi

Shillong: The Supreme Court issued a notice to Sonam Raghuvanshi on Friday regarding her release from custody. The Meghalaya government wants her bail revoked. She is the prime suspect in the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their 2025 honeymoon. The court declined to stay her release because she is already free.

Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu ordered Raghuvanshi to file a counter-affidavit. The bench will revisit the case next Thursday. During the hearing, Justice Sundresh noted, "We have a reservation, prima facie, about the High Court order." The judges want to monitor how the trial progresses.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that lower courts ignored evidence. He claimed the bail order sets a dangerous precedent. Over 90 witnesses still need to testify in the ongoing trial. The Meghalaya High Court previously upheld the bail, citing major paperwork errors. Arrest documents incorrectly cited the wrong section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder. The trial court ruled this error prejudiced the defense. Police found the victim's body in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. Prosecutors allege Raghuvanshi conspired with a lover to stage the killing.
