Guwahati: Supreme Court Judge Ujjal Bhuyan is headed to Guwahati. He will deliver a keynote speech titled “Development and Sustainability: Latest Trends” on August 8. The talk begins at 5 pm at Vivekananda Kendra, Uzan Bazar. It is a public event.

Dharitri Suraksha Mancha, an Assam-based environmental group, organized the lecture. They want to start a public debate on how to grow the economy without wrecking the environment. Mahesh Deka, the chief convener for the group, said the event aims to “encourage informed public discourse on the challenges of pursuing economic development while safeguarding the environment.”

K.N. Chowdhury, president of the Guwahati High Court Bar Association, will give a special address. He plans to focus on environmental law. The senior advocate will explain how the courts handle ecological damage linked to major construction projects. He will also look at how constitutional law might help weigh development needs against nature protection.

The event hosts want a crowd. Lawyers, students, researchers, activists, and policymakers are all on the invite list. The organizers also expect members of civil society and the media to show up for the session. This group hopes to bridge the gap between legal experts and the public to push for sustainable growth in the state.
