Guwahati: The Supreme Court moved the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta to the first week of November. Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan heard the arguments on Monday, October 5. They opted to delay their final decision. Mahanta remains held in Baksa jail alongside five other defendants.

The accused was arrested in October 2025. This came one month after the death of music icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore. A fast-track court in Assam already framed murder charges against four suspects, including Mahanta. He helped organize the North East India Festival in Singapore during the events leading to the death.

The state government updated the justices on the trial progress. Prosecutors confirmed that 94 of 394 total witnesses gave statements by August 14. Key witnesses based in Singapore still need to testify. The court demanded the trial move forward without dragging on. Officials stated these international testimonies are coming soon.

Garima Saikia Garg, the widow of the late singer, shared her reaction on Facebook. She wrote, "This is the blessings of God and the power of the Assamese people together. Truth will always prevail!" She also expressed that her faith in the national justice system grew stronger. Zubeen Garg's sister, Dr. Palmee Borthakur, thanked the Almighty following the latest court update.
