Student and mother arrested following school beef controversy in Assam

Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have detained a student and his mother following allegations that beef was brought onto the premises of Habraghat Higher Secondary School in Goalpara. The incident allegedly occurred on June 5 when five students reportedly pressured two classmates to consume meat during the lunch break.

After the two students reported the encounter to school staff, they claimed the assistant teacher advised them to keep the matter quiet. When no immediate action followed, the families filed a formal complaint at the Krishnai Police Station. This led to protests by local organizations and community members demanding accountability from the school administration.

Superintendent of Police Navaneet Mahanta and District Commissioner Pradeep Timung visited the campus to address the community. During the visit, the District Commissioner stated, "The incident is unfortunate and I appeal to parents to exercise caution regarding the food items children bring to school."

Following an investigation, police arrested a student and his mother, Nur Sahida Begum, who were subsequently sent to judicial custody. While other students involved were questioned, officials have promised a thorough inquiry. In response to the unrest, local leaders and the school management committee are holding meetings to discuss safety and prevent further disputes.
