State seeks land for Kiang Nangbah statue in Jowai

Shillong: Meghalaya Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai is pushing to build a life-size statue of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah in Jowai. He sent a formal request to Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar asking for 10,000 square feet of vacant government land at Mihmyntdu.

Local MLA and Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla led a site inspection to find the right spot. Local leaders, student union members, and staff from Kiang Nangbah Government College joined the walk-through. They eyed a plot along the main road for the project. The group agreed the land should transfer to the Arts and Culture Department. It is a big move.

The plan includes naming the location U Kiang Nangbah Square to honor the man who fought British rule in the Jaintia Hills. Shullai says the memorial matters. He noted that the proposed site "would serve as a source of pride for the people of the Jaintia region and Meghalaya as a whole."
